Maruti Suzuki Ignis is one of the most interesting products from the bag of the Indo-Japanese car maker in India. The reason why we say this is due to the buzz it has created among young buyers all thanks to its unique design, compact yet spacious cabin and peppy engine lineup. And last but not the least, its aggressive price range. The Ignis targets the ‘Millennials’ the young generation born between late 80s and early 90s. The rising popularity of the Maruti Ignis can also be determined by its booking figures. The crossover breached over 10,000 bookings within the first week of its arrival.
Currently, the crossover has a waiting period of 2 months. More specifically, the Ignis Alpha petrol (MT) and diesel models have a waiting period up to 8 and 12 weeks respectively. The AMT-equipped variants are in great demand as well. The Maruti Ignis is being offered in 11 variants across four trims Sigma, Delta, Zeta and Alpha. One must note that the entry-level Sigma variant isn’t available in the diesel version. Maruti Suzuki claims that the small car carries DNA of an SUV combined with latest technology, uniqueness and innovation.

Ignis Interior Design
At first glance, the Maruti Suzuki Ignis employs a completely different approach to design as compared to what we have seen with other recent Maruti Suzuki products. To start off with, the Ignis has a two tone black and off-white interior as compared to the black and beige or all beige interior that is usually seen in most of its products. The dashboard itself is quite flat and sharp and but the designers have made sure that there are enough contours and steps to make it look attractive.
The steering wheel is similar to the one used on the Baleno and gets the audio and phone controls. The chunky steering wheel does not get any leather wrapping like the Ciaz does but we are sure it can be added as a part of the iCreate customization program. The instrument cluster on the Ignis is crisp and clear and features two main dials. The speedometer and tachometer get white backlighting and a blue accent light but also gets customizable ambient lighting options in the top of the line variant.
Ignis Exterior Designing
Talking about its looks, designing of Ignus is both innovative and retro. It is based on the platform of Baleno and company claims that this model will be the lightest and stiffest of all Maruti models. Its biggest distinct feature is the new headlamp units. This car has the regular headlight unit. Regular panel-mounted outside rear-view mirrors (ORVMs), pull-style door handles instead of flush-style units the concept, 16-inch aluminum wheels, and revised bumpers are also the noticeable changes. The rear of the car is accompanied by the tailgate mounted spoiler, bumper with black insert and a windscreen wiper.
Ignis Engine, Specs and Mileage
The sub-4m Ignis Premium urban compact car powered by the four-valves-per-head, inline, four-cylinder, DOHC petrol power unit which has a displacement of 1197 cc. The VVT, K-series petrol engine, also found in the engine bay of Swift, is capable of pushing out a maximum power output of 84 bhp at 6,000 rpm and 115 Nm of peak torque at 4,000 rpm and delivers a good ARAI certified mileage of 20.89 Kmpl.
India bound Ignis will come with 2WD standard model and 4WD will be optional. For 4WD drive system model, the car can be offer automatic transmission. The more details will come out after Feb 2016 Delhi Auto Expo. Some car experts also say India will also get 1.3 liter engine option. One thing is very clear about this car and it is its performance and mileage. With a powerful engine, Ignis will provide better pick-up, top speed, traction, bhp and torque power which indirectly affects the fuel economy.
The DOHC 1.25 liter K12C engine holds the 16-valve unit and other smart Hybrid technology which gives the silent performance without unwanted engine noise. The engine specs and features are ideal for tackling almost every Indian tracks with great stability in all weather seasons.
Maruti Suzuki Ignis to come with the 1.3 diesel engine as well with 75 PS of power at 4,000 rpm and 190 Nm peak torque at as low as 2,000 rpm and comes with 5-speed manual transmission as standard while a five-speed AMT, similar to Dzire automatic, is also offered in the mid 2 variant. Considering the weight and length of the car and same engines as the Baleno, petrol delivers a good mileage of 20.89 km/l and diesel motor delivers 26.80 km/l.

Ignis Seats and Space
The Ignis is offered with a 5 seater layout in India. All variants have a black upholstery package only although designs do vary from variant to variant. The top of the line version seen here has comfortable seats and offers good lumbar support as a whole. The front seats slide and recline to adjust to any driving position. The rear seats are quite upright but comfortable and offer a lot of leg space as compared to cars like the Swift.
The central tunnel is not very obtrusive into the interior compartment, which means three people can easily sit next to each other at the rear. That said, the rear seats should have had an armrest central console and rear AC vents, both of which are missing. The headroom, of course, is plenty due to the way the Ignis is designed. The Ignis is the second car to be based on the Baleno platform and the packaging advancements are pretty obvious. Despite being very spacious at the back, the Ignis still has a large boot.
